I could not get a reliable set of 2026 monthly temperature figures for Munich or Garmisch out of the German Weather Service’s own site to cite honestly, so this is built from something just as useful: when things are actually open. Neuschwanstein runs full 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. hours from March 28 through October 15, 2026, then drops to 10 to 4 for winter. The Kehlstein road to the Eagle’s Nest is closed roughly from mid-October to early or mid-May, which removes one whole sight from the winter half of the calendar entirely. Herrenchiemsee keeps longer hours and running garden fountains from spring through late October, then shortens both for winter. The Königssee’s longer boat run to Salet only operates from the end of April to mid-October.

Every “best time to visit” page wants to hand you a chart of average temperatures, and averages are the least useful number in the Alps, where a July afternoon can be a thunderstorm and a January morning can be blue sky over fresh snow. So this page is built from the thing that matters just as much for a trip: which sights are running their full hours and which ones are not running at all, month by month, straight from the operators’ own sites. It slots into Bavaria by train as the seasonal layer on top of the rest of the trip planning there.

The one sight that disappears for half the year

The Eagle’s Nest is the single clearest seasonal marker on this whole page. The Kehlstein road that the bus uses is not driveable in snow and ice, so the site closes for the winter outright, typically opening again sometime in early or mid-May and running through to mid or late October depending on the weather that particular year2. If seeing it is the point of your trip, that window, not a temperature chart, is the one that actually decides your dates.

The shoulder-season warning

Several of the high-Alpine and lake sights describe themselves as weather-dependent in the shoulder months rather than on a fixed calendar. Herrenchiemsee’s own boat landing stages can become inaccessible due to low water levels in a dry summer, and the operators of the Zugspitze, the Nebelhorn and the Königssee’s Salet run all effectively ask visitors to confirm current-day operation before building an Alpine day trip between roughly November and April6. That is not a closure date, it is a standing caveat, and it is worth taking seriously precisely because it does not come with a number attached.

Resi says If I had to pick one stretch, it would be the second half of May through September: everything on this page is running its full hours, the Eagle’s Nest is open, and you are not gambling on a shoulder-season weather call. October has its own case, mostly a beer-scented one, but you trade it for Neuschwanstein’s shorter hours after the 15th.

Christmas markets, without a date I can vouch for

Munich’s Christmas market at Marienplatz is a genuine, recurring fixture of the city, not a seasonal rumor7. What I am not going to do is print a specific 2026 date range or set of hours for it, because the pages that would confirm them were not loading cleanly at the time of writing, and a wrong date is worse than no date. Check the city’s own site closer to your trip.

What a season boundary actually buys you

In winter, lean toward Munich itself and take the Alpine sights as day trips rather than a multi-stop Alpine base, since several of them, the Eagle’s Nest above all, simply are not operating.
