Munich’s Christmas Markets: Marienplatz, Tollwood and the Neighborhood Markets

Munich does not run one Christmas market. It runs a small constellation of them, each with its own crowd, and picking the right one for an evening matters more than most visitors realize before they show up at Marienplatz on a Saturday and cannot move. Marienplatz: the one everyone means

The Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz is the market people picture when they say “Munich Christmas market,” running November 20 through December 24, 2026, open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, and only until 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve itself¹. Steps away at St. Peter’s church, the Kripperlmarkt runs alongside it and is generally understood to be Germany’s largest Nativity-scene market, with roots going back to Munich’s first independent Nativity market in 1757³. It is small, quiet compared to the main square, and worth the two-minute walk if hand-carved figures are more your thing than mulled wine stalls.

Tollwood: the alternative market at the Theresienwiese

Where Oktoberfest’s tents stand in September, Tollwood’s Winter Festival takes over from November 24 to December 23. Access to the grounds and the Market of Ideas, its handmade-goods market, costs nothing; you pay only for the Grand Chapiteau circus and dance shows and for the New Year’s Eve party held on December 31². Hours shift by day: weekdays open at 2 p.m., weekends at 11 a.m., and closing runs from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m. depending on the day of the week, with the festival’s final day, December 23, closing at 10 p.m.². It is a different atmosphere from Marienplatz entirely, built for browsing crafts and eating your way through a dozen stalls rather than photographing a gothic town hall.

The neighborhood markets

Beyond the two big ones, several smaller markets run on their own calendars, and naming them here without a date is more useful than pretending Munich has published one.

The Mittelalterlicher Weihnachtsmarkt, the Advent Spectacle and Medieval Christmas Market at Wittelsbacher Platz, leans into its theme with wooden huts, merchants in period dress, open-fire flatbread and grilled sausage, and a spiced-wine drink the market calls Drachenglut, dragon’s embers³. Schwabing’s market at Münchner Freiheit has been run by local artists and restaurateurs for more than 40 years, and adds an art tent, a sculpture trail and free concerts to the usual stalls³. Pink Christmas at Stephansplatz, near Sendlinger Tor, has run since 2005 and puts a small cabaret stage with drag and variety acts alongside the market itself³.

Haidhausen’s market at Weissenburger Platz has run for 40 years too, with live Christmas music most days and a hand-carved South-Tyrolean Nativity scene, and the market under the Chinesischer Turm in the Englischer Garten adds a children’s carousel, horse-drawn carriage rides and weekend Advent carol singing from the tower’s brass band. Both were still listed as “date to be announced” for 2026 as of this writing, so check before you plan an evening around either one³.

The Krampuslauf, if you are here for it

Munich’s Krampuslauf runs through the old town on Sunday, December 13, from 3 to 5 p.m., starting at Frauenplatz and Augustinerstraße and moving via Kaufinger Straße, Sendlinger Straße, Dultstraße and Rindermarkt to the Viktualienmarkt and the Altes Rathaus, with around 25 groups and more than 300 costumed participants⁴. Where to base yourself

Every market on this page sits within the Altstadt or a short U-Bahn ride from it, so the practical question is less “which neighborhood” and more “how far from Marienplatz do you want to be walking back after Glühwein.” Staying inside or right at the edge of the old town keeps every market on this list within an easy walk or one stop on the U-Bahn; rates rise through the market season, so check the operator’s price list before you budget rather than assuming an earlier-year number still holds.
