Oktoberfest in the US and Canada: The Big Ones, by Region

In brief

You do not need a passport for a Maß and a pretzel; North America runs its own Oktoberfests, and several of the biggest publish their own 2026 dates. Cincinnati’s Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, the self-described largest Oktoberfest celebration in America, runs September 17 to 20, 2026, marking its 50th year. Kitchener-Waterloo in Ontario runs a full three-week festival, September 25 through October 17, 2026, with its main downtown weekend October 9 to 11. Leavenworth, Washington spreads its Bavarian-village Oktoberfest across three separate weekends in October, and La Crosse, Wisconsin has been running its own continuously since 1961. This page covers the ones whose official sites confirm this year’s dates, region by region, not every town Oktoberfest in North America.

Munich is not the only place pouring a Maß in a tent this fall. Dozens of North American towns run their own Oktoberfest, some going back over sixty years, and a few of them are genuinely worth planning a trip around if a flight to Bavaria is not in the cards this year. This page is part of my Oktoberfest guide, and it sticks to festivals whose own websites state a 2026 date, organized by region so you can find the one nearest you.

One honest note before the list: this is not every Oktoberfest in North America, it is the ones I could confirm. Several long-running festivals, including two I mention below, would not give up a firm 2026 date on their own site as of this writing, and I would rather tell you that than guess.

Midwest

Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio. The 2026 dates are September 17 to 20, at Sawyer Point and Yeatman’s Cove on the riverfront, with free admission1. It is the festival’s 50th anniversary, and the city has built a new 31-foot Sam Adams-branded biergarten stage with a glockenspiel, plus a 300-foot festival tent for over a thousand guests and a first-time VIP experience1. Hours run Thursday 4 to 10 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the festival’s own site describes the previous year’s attendance at 808,300, calling itself America’s largest Oktoberfest celebration1.

Oktoberfest USA, La Crosse, Wisconsin. The 2026 dates are September 24 to 27, and the organizers bill it as the longest-running Oktoberfest in the Midwest, held continuously since 19614. The schedule runs a full program: Thursday brings a Craft Beer Night and a Torchlight Parade, Friday opens with the Tapping of the Golden Keg at 11 a.m., Saturday has the Maple Leaf Parade at 10 a.m., and Sunday is free admission from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.4. It is centered on its own festival grounds at #1 Oktoberfest Strasse.

Frankenmuth, Michigan. Frankenmuth’s own events page lists a Frankenmuth Oktoberfest at the Harvey Kern Pavilion, but only as a recurring pattern, “the third weekend of September,” with no confirmed calendar date for 2026 on the page as fetched5. If you are planning around this one specifically, call ahead to Frankenmuth’s visitor services before you book anything.

West

Leavenworth Oktoberfest, Washington. This is the odd one out in format: rather than one continuous run, it spreads across three weekends, October 2 to 3, October 9 to 10, and October 16 to 17, 2026, in the town’s built-for-tourism Bavarian village3. Fridays run 6 p.m. to midnight and Saturdays noon to midnight, across a Festhalle main stage, a Bierzelt tent and a Gazebo Stage, plus a street fair. Tickets are $20 for a Friday, $40 for a Saturday or $50 for a full weekend pass, with children 12 and under free, and minors have to leave by 9 p.m. with no re-entry after 10 p.m.3. The 2026 lineup includes Oesch’s Die Dritten on the first weekend and Austria’s Freddy Pfister Band on the third3.

Southeast

Helen, Georgia. Helen has run a long, multi-weekend Oktoberfest for decades and is one of the better-known names in American Oktoberfest tourism, but I could not confirm 2026 dates on the town’s own site; its Oktoberfest-specific pages returned a 404 and its general events listing did not include one6. This is a case where the festival is very likely happening, on a pattern it has kept for years, and where I would still call the Alpine Helen–White County Convention and Visitors Bureau before booking travel around it.

Canada

Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, Ontario. This is the biggest Oktoberfest in Canada, and the 2026 festival runs September 25 through October 17, though events are not held every single day across that span2. The main event is the downtown “Willkommen Platz” celebration, October 9 to 11, with a free-entry Bavarian village, a biergarten and an official keg-tapping on Friday, October 9, from noon to 1 p.m.2. Families get their own parallel event, KIDtoberfest, the same three days from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kitchener City Hall Rotunda, free to attend2. The Thanksgiving Day Parade runs October 12, starting at 9:30 a.m. on Weber Street, with bleacher seats at $10 a person, and a handful of German clubs around the region, including the Alpine Club, Concordia Club, Hubertushaus, Schwaben Club and Transylvania Club, each run their own Festhallen events throughout the festival2.

Resi says Cincinnati and Kitchener-Waterloo are the two I would send a first-timer to: both are large enough to feel like an event, both publish their schedule far enough in advance to actually plan around, and neither requires the kind of Munich-scale logistics my reservation and without-a-reservation pages walk through. Leavenworth is the one to pick if you want the look of a Bavarian town more than the scale of the festival itself, it was built to resemble one on purpose.

What is actually different from Munich

None of these festivals run anything like the Wiesn’s reservation system, which is either a relief or a small disappointment depending on why you liked the idea of Oktoberfest in the first place. Cincinnati and La Crosse’s Sunday hours are free admission outright; Leavenworth sells tickets by the night or the weekend; Kitchener-Waterloo’s Willkommen Platz is free to enter and lets the biergarten and vendors do the earning. None of them ask you to plan six months out the way a Munich tent reservation does, and none of them will hand you a bill for a table minimum you never agreed to.

The trade-off is scale and atmosphere, not authenticity in some abstract sense. A 300-foot tent on the Cincinnati riverfront is still a tent with a band and a Maß in your hand; it is simply not fourteen of them on one fairground. If what you actually wanted out of Oktoberfest was the specific spectacle of the Theresienwiese, none of these substitute for it, and my Oktoberfest guide is where that trip gets planned. If what you wanted was a good beer tent on a Friday night without the flight, several of these deliver exactly that.

One practical note that applies across the list: arrival timing matters more than the calendar date. Cincinnati’s and La Crosse’s opening-day ceremonies, and Kitchener-Waterloo’s Friday keg-tapping, all draw the biggest crowds of their respective runs, the same way Munich’s own opening Saturday does. A weekday evening or a festival’s closing Sunday, where several of these run reduced or free admission, is the easier version of the same event.
